The Rho Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
The Rho Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was established at Washburn College (now university) on November 6th, 1921 by Avis Martin, former Polemarch of the Gamma Chapter. Harrison W. Hollie of the Mu Chapter assisted Brother Martin in the charter process. Kappa Alpha Psi was the first all black organization on Washburn's campus.
Martin, a senior in the law school, was named Polemarch and Dr. C.L. Williams, a Topeka dentist was named Vice Polemarch. Roy C. Garvin was made Keeper of the Records; Earl Reynolds, a junior law student, Keeper of the Exchequer; Baxter C. Duke, a Liberal arts junior, Strategus; and Harold J. Monroe, Lieutenant Strategus. Other members were Roy M. Van Dyne, Herbert Jamison, Earl Bryant, Tendell Hawkins, Wilbur Moffitt, George R. Smith and Dr. Stacy Flournoy.
